This is a quite rare and special ancient statue, from Southern China, Fujien area; the image of WENG ZHONG, a demon protector.

It was carved in a very typical Song dynasty court official's dressing.

According to an old tale, WENG ZHONG was a very tall man, born in 3rd BC, Qing dynasty period, Qin Shi Fhang cast his figures from the bronze and placed them on the capital's main gate to protect the enemy.

After Qing dynasty, Han dynasty was found, jade figure of WENG ZHONG was taken as a demon protector amulet.

The WENG ZHONG figure was evolving as the royal official image and was standing on the pavement of the tomb as a guardian from Tang dynasty, they are all over 2 meter high.

About the listing carving, it was in the mid-size, could not be carved as a tomb guardian. Its patina may offer the trace, probably carved for a worship figure in a temple, as a standing accompanist to a master god figure.
